Hello friends. Newly arrived visitors to Bali often have a question, what kind of driver’s license is needed for official movement on Bali roads? And what should you do if you arrived without the necessary documents and want to get behind the wheel?
If you have prepared for a trip to Bali and obtained an International Driving Permit, then you have the right to operate vehicles specified in IDP in Indonesia. According to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 1968, the Russian-style IDP is valid on the territory of 75 countries, including Indonesia. In simple terms, if you have an IDP in category “B,” you have the right to drive a car, but you don’t have the right to get behind the wheel of a motorcycle. To drive a scooter or motorcycle, you need to have an open category “A.”
Fines for driving without proper permit in Bali.
Article 281 of the Indonesia Administrative Code states that for driving without a driver’s license, punishment includes imprisonment up to four months or a fine of up to 1,000,000 rupiahs. Of course, imprisonment is unlikely to be applied to foreigners stopped for their first offense. However, they may demand payment of 1,000,000 Indonesian rupiahs.
Can tourists obtain local driving licenses in Bali? Yes, and the good news is that no education is required. You can try to get a local license on your own by contacting the local authority of the state auto inspection, which is located here. In the inner courtyard of the building, everything is conveniently arranged, and where to go for the permit is marked with blue signs, as shown in the photo below.
When you find an officer to obtain a license, they will ask for a list of documents, including KITAS (temporary residence permit more details here) which is necessary to obtain a license legally.
Foreign citizens without KITAS can contact agents to obtain a license. The average cost of obtaining a license through an agent is approximately equal to two and a half fines for driving without a license.
Therefore, getting a license is more profitable than paying 2-3 fines. In addition to being able to drive vehicles with local licenses, the local driver’s license can be used as an ID document for traveling around Indonesia and registering on certain websites as a resident of Indonesia.
How to get a driver’s license in Bali in 1 day?
A driver’s license in Indonesia is issued for a period of 5 years. Each category of license in Indonesia is issued separately, i.e. you need to have two licenses, one for a motorcycle and the other for a car.
