Bright green rice fields and the gloomy Mount Batukaru, shrouded in white-gray mist, with storm clouds hanging over it. I felt like Frodo Baggins from the Shire, walking through the bright green fields, through the land of hobbits and elves, following the adventures. Ahead of him lies the dark forest with the spirits of the forest, and someday he will reach the mountain where the dragon lives, guarding countless treasures. It seemed that Gandalf with a white beard, mischievous and wise eyes, of course, with his magic wand, would appear near me now. Yes, today I visited a fairy tale and was very happy, yes-yes-yes!

The rice fields of Jatiluwih are located almost in the center of the island of Bali. That’s why Sasha and I call them the “green heart of the island.” The traditional Balinese rice Beras Bali is grown on these fields, which the locals call the gift of the gods. This rice is grown organically, as it has been done on the island for centuries.

These terraces offer a glimpse of how rice is grown in Bali. By visiting these rice terraces at different stages of the rice’s maturity, one can observe entirely different landscapes each time. You can see rice terraces flooded with water when the rice is harvested and the land rests. Or bright green spaces of young rice, or already golden-yellow ears of ripe rice. Each of these scenes is delightful.

Here you can admire the mysterious Batukaru Mountain, which seems to be able to talk, so picturesque and enigmatic it is. Foggy clouds always swirl around it, hiding the mountain in their fluffy cloak. The height of the mountain is 2276 m. It is the second highest mountain in Bali (after Agung) and the third sacred mountain (after Agung and Batur).

At the foot of Mount Batukaru is the Batukaru Temple, where the spirit of the mountain resides. This temple is not as well known as its Balinese counterparts, but it is interesting in its own way. It is one of the six sacred and one of the nine protective temples of Bali, which protect the island from “dark forces”.
